Israel develops AI system to extend assault rifle capabilities

An Israeli company, Elbit Systems представила ARCAS AI-powered system, which makes rifle fire easier for soldiers.

The unit comprises a sight attachment and a helmet-mounted eyepiece, enabling soldiers in real time to track battle information.

ARCAS provides the following capabilities:

• range to the target;
• automatic ballistic correction;
• detection of firing sources and movement;
• firing from around corners and from the hip;
• identification of friendly and hostile targets;
• tracking ammunition levels;
• weapon zeroing without the need for live-fire.

The system operates thanks to an AI-equipped microcomputer integrated into the forward handguard of the assault rifle. It processes all data that enters the soldier’s field of view, as well as information about the rifle.

Combat information is presented to the soldier as an augmented reality layer over the landscape visible through the sight or eyepiece. Soldiers operate the system using a joystick button located on the forward handguard of the rifle.

According to Oren Sabag, CEO of Elbit Systems, ARCAS will increase the effectiveness and survivability of infantry and special forces.

Earlier in July, Israel deployed an AI-powered drone swarm in real combat.

\n\n\n\n

In late May, Israeli forces said that they used artificial intelligence and supercomputers in an 11-day conflict in the Gaza Strip.

In 2020, the UN documented the first known case of a combat drone attack on a person without a direct order from the operator.
