JBS paid $11 million in bitcoin to ransomware operators.

The world’s largest meat-processing company JBS paid hackers a ransom of $11 million in bitcoins. The Wall Street Journal reported this, citing CEO Andre Nogueira [Andre Nogueira].

He described the payment as \”painful\” and said it was made after most plants had resumed operations.

\n\n

A JBS spokesperson said the company immediately notified the FBI about the attack. It is not yet clear how the attackers gained access to the systems; the investigation is ongoing, he added.

\n\n

JBS became a victim of a ransomware attack in late May. The White House said that the breach was most likely carried out by hackers based in Russia.

\n\n

According to media reports, amid a rise in ransomware attacks, investigations into similar incidents in the United States were given the same level of priority as terrorism cases.

\n\n

The administration of President Joe Biden described tracking cryptocurrency transactions as one of the possible approaches to combating ransomware.

\n\n

Later the FBI reported the return of 63.7 BTC, paid to the hackers after the attack on the Colonial Pipeline operator. How exactly the agency gained access to the wallet is not disclosed.
