Jordan Peterson warns against "unbridled enthusiasm" for Bitcoin

Philosopher and professor of psychology at the University of Toronto, Jordan Peterson, described the first cryptocurrency at the Bitcoin 2022 conference in Miami as revolutionary but a cause for concern. The Block reports.

“The idea of a decentralized monetary system is a revolutionary idea. The more I think about it, the more wary I become,” he said.

As a sociologist, Peterson worries about money being pulled from political control. He says new ideas may bring unforeseen consequences, not all of them positive.

“We have no idea what would happen if money were truly decentralized. If we pull this off, Bitcoin would have the edge. Is it irreversible? Is it permanent?”

The philosopher said that he does not criticise digital gold, and his attitude toward it is not pessimism, but caution.

“I am not asking you to do anything as a result of this caution. I simply say that unbridled enthusiasm is based on the assumption that the new system will do only good. This is irrational,” he said.

During remarks at the same conference, PayPal co-founder Peter Thiel listed the main enemies of Bitcoin and called the legendary investor Warren Buffett “the sociopathic grandpa”.

At the event, Galaxy Digital founder Mike Novogratz named the condition for Bitcoin’s further growth. In his view, the asset “will take off” once the Fed pauses its tightening of monetary policy.

Earlier in November 2021, Peterson said that he had bought “a little more Bitcoin” after speaking with economist Saifedean Ammous on his podcast.
