
Kazakhstan proposes registry for mining farms
Members of Kazakhstan’s Majilis (the lower house of parliament) have proposed creating a registry of mining farms and raising electricity tariffs for cryptocurrency mining, local media report. local media.
According to deputy Zhambyl Akhmetbekov, foreign miners consume large amounts of electricity and increase their income abroad, without benefiting Kazakhstan.
“In this regard, it is proposed to create a legislative registry to account for the so-called mining farms and to impose for them a special elevated electricity tariff,” he said at the Majilis meeting.
Earlier, the country’s energy minister Magzum Mirzagaliev proposed to limit the consumption volumes of mining data centres in the event of electricity shortages.
This year, many companies involved in cryptocurrency mining have shown interest in Kazakhstan amid the Chinese authorities’ policy toward the industry.
In June, Kazakhstan’s President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev signed the law, providing for the introduction of an additional charge for mining.
