Kintsugi testnet launch to test the Ethereum 2.0 transition

Ethereum developers launched the Kintsugi testnet to test the consequences of the merge on the Proof-of-Work and Proof-of-Stake consensus algorithms.

Over the past few months, client teams have been working tirelessly to implement a new set of merge milestones. They are now live on a new testnet: Kintsugi 🍵!

“We recommend that most projects begin testing and prototyping on Kintsugi to identify any potential issues in the near term. This will ease making changes to future client versions and specifications,” wrote Tim Beiko in a blog.

He noted that after the merge, the full Ethereum client consists of the Beacon node (the ETH 2.0 Phase 0 network) and the execution engine handled by the existing ETH 1.0 client. Both layers support API endpoints and P2P connections to perform their roles.

According to Beiko, once the test results are incorporated into the software and specifications, the final round of testnets will be launched.

All existing testnets will go through the merge. Once, after the update, they are deemed stable, the Ethereum mainnet will transition to the Proof-of-Stake algorithm.

Earlier, Ethereum co-founder Joseph Lubin forecast the launch of the network’s second iteration in the second or third quarter of 2022.
