The incident occurred at a branch of the retail network located in the Dream Town mall in Kyiv. A Kyiv resident narrowly avoided being burned after touching one of the ASUS gaming laptops.

“Switching to the video on the laptop, we saw that a command panel was open. It turned out that mining Ethereum was running on the test laptop. That is why the notebook overheats so much,” she wrote.

The same program was running on several other gaming laptops.

The Kyiv resident speculated that after operating under extreme conditions the laptop is unlikely to last long for the new owner. She urged potential buyers to exercise caution when choosing equipment in this retail chain.

A MOYO spokesperson said in a comment on the post that the incident is already being investigated by the company’s security department. Concern over the situation was also voiced by the Ukrainian office of ASUS, which pledged to help identify and punish the guilty.
