Ledger Explains Discontinuation of Nano S Wallet Support
Ledger will cease software updates for the Nano S hardware wallet due to limited memory capacity. This constraint prevents the implementation of modern security features and crypto applications, explained the company’s CTO, Charles Guillemet.

The Nano S had an incredible run, it was officially retired in 2022. Since then, we’ve been gradually phasing out its full support. ? pic.twitter.com/OqFNsHL9ti

The manufacturer introduced the model in 2016 and ceased production six years later. However, the company continued to update the firmware.
“The Ledger Nano S helped define self-custody when Bitcoin was just for ‘hodling’. But nearly a decade later, as cryptocurrency and its use cases evolve, so must the hardware that protects it. That’s why we’ve updated our products to meet today’s needs,” noted Guillemet.
According to him, the main applications from the manufacturer, such as LedgerOS, Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Exchange, alone occupy nearly all of the Nano S’s 320 kB memory. These limitations prevent the installation of multiple programs, new transaction verification features, registry synchronization, blockchain swaps, and even language packs.
“These options are crucial for enhancing transparency, usability, and most importantly, security in today’s complex crypto landscape. To function as intended, they require more powerful hardware, which is why we have shifted our focus to devices that can support them,” emphasized Guillemet.
Owners of the Nano S can continue to use it for storing Bitcoin, Ether, and other major digital assets. The device still supports basic operations such as sending, receiving, buying, selling, and exchanging cryptocurrencies.
Users can transfer their wallet to a more modern compatible device at any time using a seed phrase, Guillemet clarified. The manufacturer offers a 20% discount when upgrading to the Nano S Plus or Flex.
In June, the company introduced the standalone Ledger Recovery Key device for backing up wallet access.
