Mastercard files 15 trademark applications linked to the metaverses

The payments company Mastercard has filed applications to register 15 trademarks related to metaverses and cryptocurrencies.

In the documents, they refer to “multimedia-supported NFT, a marketplace for digital goods, as well as processing of payment transactions and e-commerce software in the metaverse.”

The applications were filed under Секцией 1(b). It envisages the intention to use the trademarks in the future without specifying concrete use cases and timelines. In contrast to Секции 1(a), which implies “factual use”, Section 1(b) does not require proof that the mark is already in use.

In the Mastercard application, metaverses are mentioned in the context of “sponsoring cultural and sporting events, charitable campaigns, concerts, travel, receptions, festivals and awards.”

According to the publication, in the 12 months to February 2022 the number of trademark filings related to metaverses rose from 13 to 257.

On March 15, American Express announced a similar initiative. Its statement mentions “software for transferring funds from a virtual payment card to an electronic mobile wallet.”

In January 2022, Mastercard agreed to simplify NFT purchases on an upcoming NFT marketplace of a cryptocurrency exchange.

Earlier, the financial holding JPMorgan opened a lounge in the Decentraland metaverse.
