Media: Hackers Withdraw $45,000 in Crypto Assets From Non-Operational Cryptopia Exchange

Malicious actors moved crypto assets from the New Zealand-based bitcoin exchange Cryptopia, which has been non-operational since 2019 and is in liquidation. Stuff reports.

According to the publication, American company Stakenet received on February 1 a notice of withdrawal from the cold wallet of XSN tokens worth NZD 62,000 ($45,000).

The wallet has not been used since Cryptopia’s January 2019 hack. It holds crypto assets totaling $1.97 million.

The liquidator Grant Thornton said the withdrawal was unauthorized. The incident is under investigation.

“If this unauthorized transaction occurred under Grant Thornton’s oversight, the company will have to explain why it could not ensure the security of users’ funds,” said a representative of Stakenet.

Earlier in December, Grant Thornton began accepting claims for refunds from Cryptopia account holders.
