Media: Roskomnadzor Threatens to Block YouTube
Roskomnadzor has addressed Google with a demand to lift restrictions on YouTube channels of Russia Today. Otherwise the agency threatens to block the service in full or partially on the territory of the Russian Federation, reports Interfax.
Roskomnadzor emphasises that Google’s actions violate the principles of free information dissemination and constitute an act of censorship against Russian media.
In addition to restricting access to YouTube, Google also faces a fine of up to 1 million rubles.
Earlier, the video platform blocked RT DE and Der Fehlende Part, Russian Today’s German-language channels, with no possibility of restoration.
Google explained that this was a violation of the platform’s rules due to the spread of false information about the coronavirus. In addition, during the suspension of rights, the owners attempted to circumvent the restrictions by using a different channel, thereby violating the service’s terms of use.
In May, the Federation Council proposed temporarily slowing YouTube traffic for not removing banned content and censorship of Russian media. Roskomnadzor also threatened Google services with blocking due to insufficient filtering of materials with information banned on the territory of the Russian Federation.
