Miami mayor outlines plans to take salary entirely in Bitcoin

Miami mayor Francis Suarez said he plans to become the first US politician to be paid entirely in Bitcoin.

Suarez added that he would prefer using Bitwage or Strike apps to convert his salary from fiat into Bitcoin.

According to publicly available data, in 2016–2017 the mayor’s salary was $97,000. For a month of work the politician would receive around 0.13 BTC at the rate at the time of writing, provided that his salary had not increased.

Francis Suarez has served as Miami’s mayor since 2017. In March 2021 he said he wanted to make the city a centre of Bitcoin mining and to create a centre for cryptocurrency mining.

Plans to broaden the use of digital gold in Miami also included the possibility of paying city employees in Bitcoin.

In March 2021, Suarez said he invested in the first cryptocurrency and Ethereum after the US Senate approved a $1.9 trillion plan to rescue the economy.
