Microsoft and ByteDance Launch Joint AI Project

Engineers from Microsoft and the Chinese company ByteDance announced a collaboration under the KubeRay project. The software is designed to help companies make more effective use of AI applications, CNBC reports.

Details of the project were shared by ByteDance engineer Jiasin Shan and Microsoft programmer Ali Kanso at the Ray Summit in San Francisco. They discussed their progress with experts and developers interested in building applications using the open-source Ray software.

Jiasin Shan and Kanso outlined the technical details of KubeRay and spoke about the advantages of software for designing AI applications that run on multiple machines simultaneously.

“Jiasin Shan and I have been working on the open-source project for a year… We are not in the same company, but we meet every week,” Kanso said.

Experts say collaboration between tech giants in open source is common practice. However, the Microsoft-ByteDance case stands out amid the growing rivalry between the United States and China in AI and intellectual property.

Previously, the companies had collaborated. In 2020 Microsoft приобрести TikTok from ByteDance at a time when former U.S. President Donald Trump threatened to ban the app on security grounds.

A year later, Microsoft’s chief executive Satya Nadella назвал the failed deal “the strangest thing” he had ever worked on.

In August, Oracle launched a review of the algorithms and models of content moderation on TikTok for manipulation by Chinese authorities.

In July 2020, the hacker group Anonymous accused TikTok of mass surveillance of users and handing over data to Chinese authorities.
