Mobileye to test autonomous vehicles in New York

Mobileye, the developer of computer-vision-based autonomous driving technologies, has received permission to operate robo-taxis on New York streets.

Chief Executive Amnon Shashua said that two vehicles were being tested on the city’s streets, with the fleet to grow to seven in the coming months.

The company noted that New York is among the most dangerous and congested cities in the world, with poorly regulated streets crowded with pedestrians, cyclists, and vehicles parked along the curb two to three abreast.

“I think it’s very, very difficult for a person to drive a car in New York, not to mention a robotic car,” said Shashua.

However, he said the company had taken all these factors into account when selecting a testing site for autonomous vehicles.

Mobileye’s self-driving system is based on two subsystems: one uses 12 cameras and no other sensors, the other includes LiDAR and radar but no cameras. According to Shashua, the company will merge the two subsystems later in 2021.

A company spokesperson also said that they were the first to obtain permission from New York State authorities to test vehicles on public roads.

In July, Tesla’s computer-vision Autopilot was deemed safe.

In June, the Russian Ministry of Transport introduced a bill to regulate the operation of autonomous vehicles.

In April, in the Houston suburbs, a Tesla electric car, presumably in Autopilot mode, at high speed crashed into a tree and caught fire, killing two people.
