Moscow’s ground transport to be equipped with Face Pay
In 2023, the Moscow Central Diameters (MCD) and the capital’s surface transport will be equipped with the Face Pay biometric payment system. Deputy Mayor for Transport Maxim Liksutov told RIA Novosti.

“We want Face Pay to appear on the Moscow Central Circle this year,” he added.

According to Liksutov, to date around 70,000 people have shared their biometric data, and 5,500 passengers use the service daily.

However, rights advocates urged people to refrain from registering for Face Pay. According to a member of СПЧ and AI expert Igor Ashmanov, in early 2022 his acquaintance uploaded biometric data to the app, and a couple of days later he was fined for riding the metro without a mask.

“He does not know how to withdraw his face from this system, or to whom else it has been shared,” the rights defender said.

The Metro’s press service denied Ashmanov’s claim. According to them, oversight of mask-wearing in transport is carried out by the state-run ГКУ «Организатор перевозок», which does not have access to the Face Pay database.

Earlier biometric fare-payment went live at all Moscow Metro stations.

In February, the capital’s authorities announced plans to install a new system to track citizens in the city’s underground.
