Nabiullina outlines next steps in digital ruble project

The Bank of Russia will begin discussing a detailed concept of the digital ruble with market representatives in early summer, with the next phase being testing of a dedicated platform. This was announced by Bank of Russia head Elvira Nabiullina, writes «Интерфакс».

She also noted that, besides testing and limited experiments with the digital ruble, legislative changes will be required. Earlier on this said Anatoly Aksakov, head of the State Duma Committee on the Financial Market.

Nabiullina said that the central bank understands that banks may approach the introduction of a new asset with caution, but digitalisation is rapidly changing the payments market, and the issuance by central banks of their own digital currencies is a global trend.

«The preliminary results we see — most banks, in terms of the reaction, support a two-tier system of the digital ruble, in which banks serve clients by opening wallets on the central bank’s platform and carrying out operations», — said the head of the regulator.

Earlier, the Russian Finance Ministry said that the introduction of the digital ruble will boost the competitiveness of the Russian currency in international settlements.
