New York City Public Schools Ban Use of ChatGPT
New York City public schools have banned the use of ChatGPT on district devices and on school Wi‑Fi networks. NBC News reports.

The advocates said they were concerned that students would slow their learning by cheating on tests and turning in essays they did not write.
\n\n
“While the tool can provide quick and easy answers to questions, it does not develop the critical thinking and problem-solving skills required for academic and life success,” said Jenna Lyle, a spokesperson for New York City’s public schools.
\n\n
However, enforcement may prove difficult for some institutions. Experts say blocking the chatbot within the school network and on provided devices is fairly straightforward. But this will not prevent students from using it on their own devices via cellular networks or off-campus Wi‑Fi.

Not everyone in the educational community is against the AI chatbot. Brooklyn Tech teacher Adam Stevens compared ChatGPT to the world\’s most famous search engine.
\n\n
“People were saying the same about Google 15 or 20 years ago, when students could “find answers on the Internet,”” he said.
\n\n
According to Stevens, the bot could become an ally to teachers by generating a “baseline” answer to an essay topic prompt. They would then analyze the answer with students to find ways to improve it.
\n\n
The teacher also believes that the modern educational system should move away from standardized metrics and offer students “to study what is worth knowing”.
\n\n
“We have taught an entire generation of children to chase grades, not knowledge. Of course, if the semester grade is determined by points, then ChatGPT is a threat,” Stevens says.
\n\n
In addition, OpenAI announced the development of a tool that will allow identifying texts generated by a chatbot.
\n\n
In December 2021 the AI lab introduced a chatbot with the artificial intelligence ChatGPT.
\n\n
In the same month a professor at an American university caught a student using the algorithm to write an essay.

In October, Reddit users shared stories about how they used language models to do their homework.
