New York mayoral candidate pledges to turn city into a Bitcoin industry hub

One of the candidates for the office of mayor of New York, Eric Adams, said he planned to make the city more friendly to technology and cryptocurrencies.

“I promise you that in a year you will see a different city. … We will attract business. We will become the center of life sciences, cybersecurity, autonomous vehicles, drones, and the Bitcoin center,” Adams said.

Later he stressed that New York must compete with Miami’s growing business ambitions.

Earlier, Miami Mayor Francis Suarez announced plans to invest 1% of municipal budget reserves in bitcoin, to allow city workers to receive salaries in digital gold and to attract Chinese miners with cheap energy.

According to data as of June 23, Adams leads Democratic primary rivals with 31.66% of the vote. Final primary results will be announced within a week, beginning July 12.

Bitcoin industry veteran Brock Pierce endorsed Adams. In his view, this candidate is a leader, “who knows how to unite and knows what New York needs.”

In February, businessman and mayoral candidate Andrew Yang said that if he wins the election, he would turn the city into a Bitcoin hub and other cryptocurrencies. According to The Block, he dropped out of the race.

In April, the candidate for New York City’s treasurer Reshma Patel unveiled a city development plan, based on investments in blockchain business and digital assets.
