Nigeria’s CBDC transactions exceed $9 million

The Nigerian central bank’s national digital currency was used for transactions totaling 4 billion Nigerian naira ($9.3 million). This was disclosed by the central bank governor Godwin Emefiele, reports CoinDesk.

Since the launch of Nigeria’s CBDC in October 2021, the corresponding app has been installed more than 840 thousand times. The central bank also reported 270 thousand active wallets.

Emefiele welcomed the CBDC’s integration into the economy of a country with more than 200 million people. Of them, around 40% do not have a bank account, according to The Guardian.

Earlier in February, the IMF warned about money-laundering risks in the Nigerian digital naira.

In May, SEC of Nigeria classified cryptocurrencies as securities.
