OpenAI Allows Editing of Faces in DALL-E 2

OpenAI has allowed users of the DALL-E 2 service to upload people’s faces for editing using an AI image generator. TechCrunch reports.

According to the developers, improvements in the safety system have made the face-editing feature possible through ‘minimising potential harm’. The company is confident that the new filtering method will guard against the creation of deepfakes, sexual, political and violent content.

“We have created new detection and response methods to prevent misuse,” the announcement says.

The company noted that they took this step in response to numerous consumer requests. Many of them wanted to use the tool to try on outfits or change backgrounds on family photos.

“Filmmakers told us that they want to be able to edit images of scenes with people to speed up the creative process,” the developers added.

OpenAI’s terms of service still prohibit uploading images of people without their consent or images for which the user does not hold the rights.

Previously, OpenAI allowed users to work only with photorealistic faces. The service also prohibited uploading any images of real people, including celebrities and public figures.

DALL-E 2 remains in invitation-only beta. In late August, developers said the service was being used by more than 1 million people.

In September, OpenAI introduced the Outpainting feature, allowing DALL-E 2 to generate images of any size. The service also learned to add new elements beyond the boundaries of existing drawings, taking into account the visual style of the source.

In July the company announced a reduction of bias and improvements to the safety of the DALL-E 2 neural network.
