OpenAI Links Loneliness to Increased ChatGPT Usage
More frequent use of AI-based chatbots may indicate rising loneliness and reduced time spent interacting with others. These conclusions were reached by OpenAI in partnership with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
The organizations conducted two studies involving 1,000 individuals, observing them over a month. Participants had varying experiences with ChatGPT: some were encouraged to engage in open-ended conversations, while others had personal discussions.
It was found that individuals who interacted with the chatbot via text or voice daily reported higher levels of emotional dependence on their “digital friend” and an increased sense of loneliness.
Researchers also analyzed 3 million AI conversations and surveyed people about their interactions with ChatGPT. According to the results, very few users engage in emotional conversations with the chatbot.
The researchers hope the study will lead to further monitoring of how people interact with AI.
In July 2024, entrepreneur Avi Schiffmann launched the sale of the AI-powered Friend pendant, which aims to combat loneliness.
