OpenAI to Develop a Rival to X, Reports Suggest

OpenAI is reportedly developing its own social network akin to X, according to The Verge, citing sources.

The publication notes that the project is in its early stages, with an internal prototype focused on image generation using ChatGPT, featuring a social feed.

The startup’s CEO, Sam Altman, has solicited feedback from external organizations regarding the project. The new product could emerge as a standalone application or an enhancement to ChatGPT’s capabilities.

The launch of its own social network could heighten OpenAI’s competition with Elon Musk, who in February offered to buy the startup for $97.4 billion.

“No, thank you. But we will buy Twitter [X] for $9.74 billion, if you like,” Altman replied at the time.

Entering the social media market also positions OpenAI as a new competitor to Meta, which plans to incorporate a social feed into its forthcoming AI assistant app, The Verge reports.

The new application would provide OpenAI with unique real-time data for training neural networks, data that X and Meta already possess. Musk’s Grok utilizes X’s content in its outputs, while Meta trains Llama on its vast array of user data.

“Grok’s integration with X has made everyone envious. Especially how people create viral tweets, making it say something silly,” commented one of The Verge’s sources.

Back in March, Musk’s AI startup xAI acquired the entrepreneur’s social network X.
