Opinion: Yuga Labs appoints a new CEO, signaling an important development for GameFi

Yuga Labs’ decision to appoint Daniel Alegre, a top executive at Activision Blizzard, as CEO, is important for the entire GameFi. This view was expressed by Illuvium co-founder Kieran Warwick.

“Every day there is more news about new players from the traditional gaming sector entering the GameFi space. DeFi 2.0 is cool. But games will be the narrative that kicks off the next run,” noted Warwick.

On December 16, the American video game publisher Activision Blizzard сообщил that Alegre would leave at the end of his contract on March 31, 2023. He had been with the company since April 2020 in the roles of president and chief operating officer.

On November 19, the company behind BAYC, Yuga Labs, announced that Alegre would take the role of chief executive officer in the first half of the next year.

“[Alegre] possesses valuable experience in entertainment, e-commerce and global strategic partnerships — all of which are important aspects of the immersive Web3 world,” noted co-founder of Yuga Labs, Wylie Aronov.

In December, the law firm Scott+Scott filed a lawsuit against Yuga Labs on behalf of BAYC holders and tokens of the project ApeCoin.

In the same month, the United States District Court for the Central District of California denied the motions of artist Ryder Ripps and Not Larva Labs founder Jeremy Kaen, filed in the litigation with Yuga Labs.
