Optimism team announces second OP airdrop

The developers L2 protocol Optimism will distribute 11.7 million native OP tokens among more than 300,000 unique addresses.

During the first airdrop in May 2022, 232,000 users in total received nearly 232 million OP.

That enabled the start of building a decentralized governance system for the project, the team noted. Since then, 88,000 addresses have voted on more than 90 proposals to distribute 50 million OP in the ecosystem. In February 2023, the community will decide on the first Optimism upgrade — Bedrock.

“At the same time, the mainnet is turning into a rapidly growing economy. More than 1.5 million addresses sent 64 million transactions since the first airdrop, spending about $15 million on fees,” the statement said.

The second token distribution is designed to reward governance participation and active use of the network.

The team took a snapshot on January 20, 2023. The developers will distribute tokens to addresses that:

• delegated voting rights tied to their OP;
• have collectively spent $6.10 on fees since March 25, 2022 (the average transaction cost in Ethereum).

The first airdrop accounted for about 5.4% of the OP supply, the second for about 1.44%. In total, the team pledged to distribute 19% of the total OP supply to users.

In January, Optimism surpassed the competing L2 protocol Arbitrum in daily transaction volume.
