
Pakistan to Harness Surplus Power for Bitcoin Mining
Pakistan intends to channel some of its surplus electricity into bitcoin mining and powering data centers for the AI sector. This was stated by the head of the Reuters reported, Bilal bin Saqib, advisor to the Minister of Finance and head of the Crypto Council.
The country’s energy sector is grappling with issues of excess generating capacity and rising tariffs.
The situation is exacerbated by the rapid development of solar power, which more consumers are turning to in order to reduce costs.
Cryptocurrency mining is intended to boost demand in the sector, allowing energy companies to reduce production costs. According to Saqib, the location of bitcoin mining facilities will be determined based on the surplus electricity available in specific regions.
According to Reuters, Binance founder Changpeng Zhao acts as a strategic advisor to Pakistan’s Crypto Council. His responsibilities include supporting the development of blockchain infrastructure, advising on regulatory frameworks, and assisting in the implementation of national initiatives in digital asset adoption, mining, and education.

The country has 15-20 million cryptocurrency owners, ranks third globally in the number of freelancers, and its fintech segment is rapidly developing, Saqib noted.
He acknowledged that due to the lack of digital asset regulation, Pakistan needs “regulatory sandboxes” to foster financial innovation, providing a safe environment for testing technologies, solutions, and services.
Saqib also stated that enhancing the skills of the country’s youth in blockchain and AI could create jobs, boost the economy, and increase exports through digital services.
Back in 2022, Pakistani authorities considered banning the use of cryptocurrencies and planned to block websites related to digital assets.
