Pentagon Awards OpenAI a $200 Million Contract
The U.S. Department of Defense’s digital and artificial intelligence office has signed a $200 million contract with OpenAI. The company will provide AI-based tools to the department.
According to the statement, OpenAI will develop prototypes of advanced AI solutions. These are intended to address “critical national security tasks” in both military and corporate sectors.
The work will be conducted primarily in Washington, D.C., and its surroundings. The project is expected to be completed by July 2026.
This is not the only significant technology contract for the department. The U.S. Air Force has allocated $2.18 billion to Borsight for avionics replacement in T-6A training aircraft and simulators. The program is planned to run until 2034.
The U.S. Navy is also focusing on innovation. The Georgia Institute of Technology received $14.1 million for research in quantum sensors and electronic warfare.
Another contract worth $466.6 million was awarded to American Electronic Warfare Associates for development and testing for integrated combat space.
Earlier in February 2023, the Pentagon used ChatGPT to draft an article about the launch of a new task force to combat drones.
