Pi Network's 'mining' app linked to 17 GB Vietnamese users' data leak

The Pi Network app, which enables mobile mining of digital currency, may be linked to a leak of Vietnamese users’ personal data, according to VnExpress.

A 17 GB data dump is being sold on one of the hacker forums. It is alleged to contain information obtained from Pi Network users’ KYC checks, including identity documents, addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses.

The seller has listed the database for $9,000, with payments accepted in Bitcoin or Litecoin. He says it contains data on ten thousand Vietnamese residents.

Some users believe the breach did not originate with Pi Network. They note that the platform processed KYC data through the third-party identity-checking system Yoti, and that the documents listed in the database are not requested by Pi Network.

Authorities have already begun an investigation.

Shortly before the incident, AIMultiple researchers conducted an assessment of Pi Network and concluded that the platform displays features of a multi-level marketing scheme. Pi Network also does not publish its source code, according to VnExpress.

The Pi token, which users receive, is not yet traded on exchanges, Cointelegraph notes.

In April, the Hotbit exchange was subjected to a cyberattack, in which attackers allegedly gained access to data of nearly 2 million users.
