Report: Number of cryptocurrency users has doubled since the start of the year

In the first six months of 2021, the number of cryptocurrency users worldwide more than doubled, reaching 221 million in July, according to a Crypto.com report.

For comparison, the rise from 65 million in May last year, when the research team began tracking it, to 100 million took nine months.

The latest report employs an enhanced methodology that accounts for data from the 24 largest global crypto platforms.

Experts noted that the number of users nearly doubled in just four months.

From January through April, the Bitcoin rally was the main driver, Crypto.com researchers say. During this period, growth was supported by statements from major companies such as PayPal, MicroStrategy, Visa and Mastercard, regarding the acquisition or plans to support cryptocurrencies.

In May and June, the Ethereum user base showed substantial growth. During this period, institutional investors continued to voice support for the second-largest cryptocurrency, the researchers noted.

Crypto.com CEO Kris Marszalek pledged that the team would continue refining market-sizing methodologies for a better understanding.

«The growth we observed in the first half of 2021 on our platform and across the industry is very encouraging, and we will continue to invest more as we pursue the goal of bringing cryptocurrency to every wallet», — concluded him.

In the UK, the local financial regulator counted 2.3 million crypto investors. According to a survey, about 10% of adults in the country own digital assets, and 11% plan to acquire them within a year.
