Three Russians, collectively, handed over about 8 million rubles to scammers while trying to invest in cryptocurrency. The press service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs said.
One of the victims, a 41-year-old resident of Yoshkar-Ola, registered on a platform promising high earnings.
She transferred $38,965 to her Bitcoin wallet, and then another $3,000, to allegedly obtain the ability to withdraw the deposit’s interest. However the scammers stopped responding, and the Russian woman reported the matter to the police.
A criminal case has been opened on fraud charges. The damage was estimated at nearly 3.5 million rubles.
In the Bryansk region, victims of a similar scheme were two men, aged 40 and 60. They handed over “cryptocurrency brokers” 4 million and 390,600 rubles respectively. The police continue to investigate the circumstances of the incident.
Earlier in August, two Russian residents also lost more than 8 million rubles due to Bitcoin scammers.
