FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried has not pleaded guilty to the new criminal charges. This is reported by Reuters citing sources familiar with the matter.
The charges involve recently filed charges of conspiracy to violate campaign-finance laws and bribery of Chinese authorities.
The former head of the exchange that collapsed was arrested in December 2022 in the Bahamas at the request of the United States government. Prosecutors charged him with eight criminal counts.
Contrary to Reuters reports, he has refused to plead guilty. This turn of events was forecast by WSJ sources.
In February 2023, US authorities charged Bankman-Fried with new charges, including conspiracy to commit bank fraud. According to Reuters, he does not plan to enter into a plea deal on any of the counts.
The trial is set to begin in October. Bankman-Fried could face more than a century in prison.
Earlier, former Alameda Research CEO Caroline Ellison and FTX co-founder Gary Wang pleaded guilty in connection with the collapse of the exchange. Later, their example was followed CTO of the failed platform Nishad Singh.
After extradition to the United States, Bankman-Fried was released on bail of $250 million.
In March, lawyers for the former FTX CEO reached an agreement with U.S. prosecutors on new terms for his release. The court must approve the agreement.
