REvil hackers hit Apple supplier, demand $50 million ransom

Taiwanese computer hardware maker and one of Apple’s main suppliers, Quanta Computer, was subjected to a ransomware attack by the hacker group REvil (Sodinokibi).

Bloomberg reports that the hackers said they breached the system before Apple unveiled its new products, which took place on April 20.

Earlier, a representative of REvil posted on one of the dark web forums that the hackers planned to announce the “largest attack in history”. The message was in Russian.

The attackers demanded a $50 million ransom for the decryption key, but Quanta refused to pay REvil.

By the time Apple wrapped up its presentation, the attackers released drawings of a new device resembling a MacBook. The designs dated from March 2021.

After Quanta refused to pay, the hackers turned directly to Apple. They are demanding the company pay the ransom by May 1. Until then, REvil will continue to publish new files every day.

In addition to Apple, Quanta is a supplier to companies such as HP, Facebook and Google Alphabet.

Earlier in March, REvil encrypted the files of another Taiwanese company, Acer, and demanded to pay $50 million in Monero.
