Roskomnadzor extends Twitter throttling
Roskomnadzor said it would extend the measures to slow Twitter’s traffic until May 15. The decision to fully block the social network on the territory of the Russian Federation was postponed, as the company began removing banned content.
“Given Twitter’s decision to change the principles and speed of its own moderation service in Russia for the first time and to remove a substantial portion of the content prohibited in Russia, Roskomnadzor decided not to move to the next measure — a full blocking of the social network,” officials said.
By extending the throttling measures, Roskomnadzor granted the social network additional time to remove all banned content.
Twitter said it had engaged in a “constructive dialogue” with the Russian authorities and conducted joint consultations with Roskomnadzor on a joint response to banned messages, reports РБК.
As reported, Roskomnadzor began throttling Twitter’s operation in Russia due to the social network’s refusal to delete content banned in Russia since March 10. The agency also said there remained the possibility of a full blocking of the social network in Russia.
After this, Twitter began removing banned content, but it still received fines of 8.9 million rubles for publishing information, “to which access is restricted in accordance with Russian law”.
