Russia Begins Blocking Tor

Users and experts have reported blocking access to the Tor network within Russia.

According to the OONI Explorer service, problems with Tor operation in Russia began on December 2.

A technical expert from the public organization RosKomSvoboda, Vadim Misbakh-Solovyev, said that some providers or TSPU equipment in Moscow block access to the Tor servers configured as “default”.

“For now, using bridges (servers set up by users) helps. But their list is just as public, so providers will have no trouble after some time to start tracking the bridges list and blocking them,” he noted.

The GlobalCheck project also reports that the blocking occurs via TSPU equipment.

In 2020, the Main Radio Frequency Center, a Roskomnadzor subordinate, announced plans to restrict mesh networks, IoT networks and anonymous protocols.
