Russian man loses 1.2 million rubles in a Bitcoin scam

A resident of Borovichi in the Novgorod region fell victim to a fake cryptocurrency exchange run by criminals, reported by the local police.

In early June, the victim saw an advertisement offering the chance to earn extra income from investing in digital assets. After registering on the site, a platform ‘consultant’ contacted him and offered help in carrying out financial operations.

According to the fraudster’s instructions, the victim transferred various amounts to the specified accounts over nearly three months, from 96,000 to 380,000 rubles.

When the Borovichi resident attempted to withdraw assets into fiat, the intermediary persuaded him to prepay taxes and insurance amounting to 260,000 rubles, after which he stopped responding.

In total, the victim transferred about 1.2 million rubles to the scammers.

Earlier, the Bank of Russia warned Russians about cryptocurrency pyramids aimed at retirees.
