Russian national Egor Kryuchkov pleads guilty to conspiracy to organise a cyberattack on the computer network of a Nevada-based company. reports from the U.S. Department of Justice.
According to investigators, Kryuchkov offered $1 million in bitcoins to an employee of the company to install malware in their computer system. He later planned to demand a ransom from the organisation for not disclosing commercial information.
U.S. law enforcement officials have not ruled out that Kryuchkov was acting for a team that coordinated his actions.
The sentencing hearing is scheduled for May 10. Kryuchkov faces up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
The FBI arrested the Russian in August 2020. While court documents do not disclose the name of the company Kryuchkov allegedly planned to attack, Tesla founder Elon Musk previously stated that the target was his corporation.
