Russia’s Energy Ministry: miners will not be charged residential electricity tariffs
The Energy Ministry plans to exclude miners’ electricity consumption from the reduced residential tariffs. This was stated by the head of the ministry, Nikolai Shulginov, according to RBC.
According to him, the ministry is currently working on this issue.
Shulginov emphasised the need for tariff differentiation. Otherwise, the volume of cross-subsidisation would have to be increased, which is unacceptable, the minister said.
Earlier, the governor of Irkutsk Oblast Igor Kobzev complained to the government about miners consuming electricity for cryptocurrency mining at residential tariffs. According to him, as a result, in 2021 residential electricity consumption in the region would exceed the previous year’s levels by 159%.
He also proposed to enshrine mining as a form of entrepreneurial activity in law.
