At the time of writing, the blockchain has been down for about an hour.

“Ecosystem engineers are investigating the Mainnet Beta outage,” the team reported in an incident report.

Laine, a blockchain software developer and Solana validator, clarified that the outage was due to a “performance degradation” of the main network.

“Validators have started taking snapshots using the state of their local ledger to prepare for a restart. Developers are still preparing the release,” the firm stated.

Update:

Laine announced the commencement of the network restart. Validators are updating the software to v1.17.20. Once 80% of the stake is reached, the cluster will resume block production from slot 246,464,041 (the halt occurred at 246,464,003). At the time of writing, progress is at 11%.

Update:

Representatives from Laine reported the restoration of network functionality, with “new rooted blocks and finalized slots” appearing.

The SOL token reacted to the blockchain halt by dropping from around $96 to below $94. According to CoinGecko, the asset depreciated by 4.5% over the day.

In February 2023, Solana validators restarted the network twice due to an unknown error that caused a complete halt in economic activity.

In June 2022, the blockchain experienced a failure due to a bug in processing “long-term non-targeted transactions,” which led to a consensus disruption.
