Prosecutors in South Korea have requested a 10-year prison sentence for the man who stabbed Haru Invest CEO Lee Hyun Soo, charging him with attempted murder. This was reported by local media.
The attack on the head of the crypto company, accused of embezzling approximately $826 million from clients, occurred in August 2024 in a courtroom. The victim of Haru Invest’s activities, identified as Kang, used a 20 cm knife as a weapon.
“The defendant intended to kill the victim and approached from behind during the court session, delivering multiple blows, but it ended as an attempt,” stated the judge presiding over Kang’s case.
The defense argued that the defendant did not deliver a fatal blow and therefore did not plan to commit murder. Lawyers also requested leniency, noting that Kang suffered “significant losses” due to Haru Invest’s suspension of withdrawals. The company did not return his investment of approximately 100 BTC (~$8.3 million).
Prosecutors argued that the defendant had premeditated and prepared the crime.
The verdict for Kang will be delivered on April 4.
Haru Invest executives, accused of fraud and other crimes, were detained in February 2024. They were released on bail.
In June 2023, the company halted withdrawals, citing issues with service partners.
