S&P Dow Jones Indices, the division of the American financial data provider S&P Global, launched indices based on Bitcoin, Ethereum, and a basket of these cryptocurrencies.
Products under the S&P DJI brand use data and calculation methodology from the New York firm Lukka. The companies agreed to collaborate in December 2020.
The S&P Bitcoin Index has the ticker SPBTC, the S&P Ethereum Index — SPETH, tracking the performance of the two preceding assets of the S&P Crypto Mega Cap Index — SPCMC.
Indices are calculated in points, not in U.S. dollars. According to S&P spokesperson Ray McConville, rather than representing actual value, they reflect price growth.
The data are calculated on business days. They are available by subscription to clients of the service. Rebalancing is conducted quarterly.
The instruments will compete with Bloomberg and Galaxy’s counterparts.
In December 2020, CBOE announced the creation of cryptocurrency indices.
