Study Reveals Only 4% of Global Population Owns Bitcoin
Currently, a mere 4% of the world’s population holds digital gold, according to a study by River.
The highest concentration of holders is in the United States, where 14% of people own bitcoins.
Analytical data indicates that North America leads in cryptocurrency adoption among individuals and organizations. The least developed market is Africa, with only 1.6% of the population owning the digital asset.
Researchers emphasize that bitcoin has tapped only 3% of its potential market. This figure was calculated based on an analysis of the maximum available audience, including governments, corporations, and institutional investors.

The main barriers to widespread cryptocurrency adoption remain insufficient financial and technical literacy. Many still view digital gold as a fraudulent scheme.
The high volatility of the asset also hinders its use as a store of value or medium of exchange, particularly in developing countries.
Experts highlight that despite progress, bitcoin remains in the early stages of global dissemination.
Back in October 2024, BlackRock CEO Larry Fink stated that the first cryptocurrency is an alternative to gold and other commodities, and its global adoption will continue to grow.
