Survey: Russian business pays ransomware demands more often, according to a study

In 2021, Russian companies began paying ransomware operators more often, according to a Positive Technologies study. This is reported by «Ъ».

According to the survey, in the current year 16% of organisations in Russia complied with the hackers’ demands after attacks. In the 2019 study, none of the respondents paid the ransomware demands.

The main targets have been the financial sector, the fuel and energy sector, and government institutions. A third of the companies surveyed were targeted by attacks.

Analysts point to the growth of the cryptocurrency market as one of the main reasons behind the surge in attackers — hackers are asking for payments in digital assets.

According to Comparitech, in 2020 the damage to Russia from cybercrime attacks amounted to $15.2 billion.
