The Russian oil company Tatneft has shown interest in the possibility of earning additional profit from cryptocurrency mining. The corresponding project won at a youth forum organized by the company, пишет the corporate newspaper ‘Oil News’.

The idea’s author is Irek Kiramov, an engineer at the Network Management Center. According to him, one of Tatneft’s problems is excess energy capacity.

“In mining, the main cost item — more than 85% — is electricity. One can diversify production and mine not only oil, but also cryptocurrency. For the company this could become another growth point and bring additional profit,” he said.

Kiramov has already registered the project in the automated system ‘Edison’ and intends to participate in its implementation.

More than 50 young professionals took part in the forum. Tatneft selected the top six projects that it is ready to implement.

In October 2020, the Russian industrial mining operator BitCluster opened a major data center at the site of the closed NorNickel plant in Norilsk. The company estimates that its total computing power could reach roughly 1% of the Bitcoin network’s total hashrate.
