Telegram to Share User Data with Authorities

Telegram has enhanced its search system using AI and updated its user agreement to allow the sharing of IP addresses and phone numbers of those violating platform rules with authorities. This was announced by Pavel Durov.

User data may be disclosed to “relevant authorities in response to legitimate legal requests.”

The head of the messaging app noted that its search system is “more powerful” compared to other applications, as it allows the discovery of public channels and bots. However, this feature has been exploited by individuals to sell illegal goods.

In recent weeks, a special team of moderators has used AI to make searching on Telegram “much safer.” All “problematic content” is no longer accessible.

“These measures should deter criminals. Telegram’s search is intended for finding friends and news, not promoting illegal goods. We will not allow wrongdoers to compromise the integrity of our platform for nearly a billion users,” Durov stated.

Since September, Telegram has been promptly processing and responding to legal requests from European authorities.

Back in August, French authorities detained Durov as part of an investigation opened on July 8.

On August 28, the founder of Telegram was placed under judicial supervision with a €5 million bail and the requirement to appear at the police station twice a week. He is prohibited from leaving France until March 2025.

In his first post after being released, Durov announced enhanced moderation on Telegram.
