Telegram Username Gifted to Pavel Durov After $80,000 Sale

Tech blogger Pavel Fedorov sold his Telegram username @pavel for $80,000 in TON tokens. This was reported by Pavel Durov.

According to the messenger’s founder, Fedorov “claimed” his nickname nine years ago for free. He used the auction platform Fragment for the sale.

The lot was purchased by the user @founder, who also owns @crypto and other similar nicknames. After the purchase, he gifted this username to Durov.

“This demonstrates how Telegram users benefit from direct ownership of their names. Over the past 18 months, usernames and anonymous numbers have been sold for $350 million,” emphasized the head of the messenger.

He also noted that the new version of the app allows tracking the number and amount of transactions.

At the end of the post, Durov mentioned purchasing the nickname @paul for 10,000 TON (~$56,400 at the time of writing) to “prevent generous gifts” from other users.

Earlier, the founder of Telegram announced Toncoin payments to content creators and cryptocurrency purchases within the app.

In April, Tether added support for The Open Network (TON) by issuing tokens worth $10 million.

Developers of TON have unveiled a roadmap for 2024. It includes the implementation of gasless transactions, an update to Wallet 5.0, and the development of a new cross-chain technology called Teleport. The team also announced plans for expansion into the Asian market.
