Tether Integrates USDT into Bitcoin Ecosystem

Tether has introduced support for its stablecoin USDT within the Bitcoin ecosystem, both at the base layer and on the Lightning Network.

This integration was made possible through the Taproot Assets protocol from Lightning Labs.

The initiative provides a scalable, seamless payment solution with options such as microtransactions, remittances, and cross-border settlements.

Tether and Lightning Labs will continue their collaboration to further enhance the ecosystem and support the community.

In October 2024, the issuer announced that the stablecoin was utilized by 330 million cryptocurrency wallets and on-chain accounts.

At the start of the fourth quarter, there were 109 million USDT holders, more than double the number for Bitcoin and close to Ethereum’s figures.

Back in January 2025, the company launched a cross-chain stablecoin USDT0 on an Ethereum L2 solution called Ink from Kraken.

In August 2024, Tether added support for Aptos. This followed an expansion to TON (Telegram Open Network) in April.

In June, the firm decided to cease issuing the stablecoin on the EOS and Algorand networks.
