Tether unit to develop Bitcoin services on the Lightning Network

The issuer of the stablecoin USDT — Tether Holdings Limited — has launched a subsidiary, Synonym Software, which will focus on developing an “alternative” internet economy based on Bitcoin and the Lightning Network.

The new initiative возглавил former Bitrefill chief commercial officer John Carvalho. The company’s technical director is Paolo Ardoino, who occupies a similar role at cryptocurrency exchange Bitfinex (an affiliate of Tether Holdings Limited).

At launch, Synonym Software представила протокол с открытым исходным кодом Slashtags. Он использует модель WoT для создания взаимодействующих, нецензурированных сетей, связанных между собой через зашифрованные частные каналы.

Согласно заявлению компании, протокол позволит пользователям искать и публиковать информацию, монетизировать ее. Для создания аккаунтов в системе они смогут использовать приватные ключи от биткоин-кошельков.

The Synonym Software ecosystem will include a non-custodial wallet and the Blocktank service, enabling platforms and apps to acquire, configure and manage connections to the LN. Based on Slashtags, the company plans to launch a publishing platform and a decentralized social network. The company also intends to issue tokens for the Lightning Network.

«Being part of [iFinex — the parent company of Tether and Bitfinex], Synonym has the opportunity to integrate its products in ways strategically important for Bitcoin; we can redirect these resources toward the development of digital gold. Slashtags Accounts and Blocktank will be integrated with Bitfinex. USDT will be rolled out on the LN, in our apps and the Blocktank service for liquidity of the token channel,» Carvalho told Bitcoin Magazine.

He also said that Synonym Software will use the Omni protocol and, in particular, the OmniBOLT specification, allowing stablecoins to operate on the LN. According to Carvalho, the choice fell on this project because it does not require connecting additional blockchains.

«Omni transactions are Bitcoin transactions with special information that is tracked by the Omni network. The project uses the same scaling methods as Bitcoin, such as LN», — he explained.

Earlier, Arcan Research analysts forecast that the number of Lightning Network users will exceed 700 million by 2030.

According to Blockstream’s Samson Mow, the theoretical throughput of the LN network is 40 million transactions per second.
