“Dear friends! On Friday, February 7, at 10 am I will be free! It is not real freedom, but it is better than prison. Today, a Dutch court suspended my pretrial detention under the condition of electronic monitoring. This will give me a chance to work on my appeal and fight for justice. Thank you to everyone who supported me and helped make this possible!” he wrote.
On May 14, 2024, a court in the Netherlands found Pertsev guilty of laundering $1.2 billion through the mixer and sentenced him to 64 months in prison. Since then, the developer has been in custody. In July, he was denied bail pending his appeal.
In November, Pertsev’s pretrial detention was extended.
Charges of money laundering and sanctions violations in the US have also been brought against Tornado Cash co-founders Roman Storm and Roman Semenov.
In January 2025, the US Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals overturned the sanctions imposed by the OFAC in 2022 against the mixer, sending the case back for further proceedings.
