Tornado Cash developer to be released under house arrest

The Tornado Cash mixer developer Alexey Pertsev, who is held in a Dutch prison, has been allowed to await his trial at home since April 26. This was reported by Eleonora Blank, the organiser of demonstrations in support of the Russian.

According to her, Alexey Pertsev will be under monitoring with an electronic ankle bracelet and movement restrictions.

The next hearing in the case is scheduled for May 24.

In August 2022 OFAC added to the sanctions list Tornado Cash on suspicion of laundering more than $7 billion in cryptocurrencies. The service was used by, among others, the North Korean hacker group Lazarus Group.

Chainalysis estimates that through Tornado Cash more than $3.5 billion passed, of which up to $1.2 billion was directly linked to thefts, hacks and other illicit operations.

On 12 August, Dutch authorities arrested the service’s developer Alexey Pertsev. He is suspected of involvement in money laundering and concealing illicit financial flows.

In February 2023, the Russian national refused bail due to a high likelihood of flight. Pertsev denies any charges against him.
