Trezor unveils new hardware wallet, the Trezor Safe 3

The hardware wallet maker Trezor introduced new gadgets: the Trezor Safe 3, the eponymous device in a limited edition with a focus only on Bitcoin, and Trezor Keep Metal — a solution for backing up seed phrases.

“Despite the overused axiom ‘not your keys, not your cryptocurrency’,” only 2% of 420 million users resort to non-custodial storage. […] It is obvious that there is a need to educate how to securely store your digital assets and offer them convenient products,” — commented in an interview with Decrypt by Matej Jak, head of Trezor.

Trezor Safe 3 supports more than 7,000 cryptocurrencies and integrates with the Trezor Suite app for a range of operations.

The device includes a hardware component protected against unauthorized access (EAL6+). It provides additional protection against physical attacks.

In case of loss or theft, owners of Trezor Safe 3 can still protect their assets with a secure password that is stored off the wallet.

According to Jak, the device is aimed at new entrants. The company forecasts that, in the next bull market, this will triple the audience of the crypto market.

Trezor Keep Metal is designed to back up the seed phrase. Unlike paper, which can be used to write it down, metal is more durable, enduring house fires, artillery strikes and other forms of damage.

Made from aerospace-grade stainless steel, the Trezor Keep Metal is corrosion-resistant and has a waterproof seal that provides protection from fire, water, acids and impacts.

“The events of the last year have shown the risks people take when entrusting the storage of cryptocurrencies to centralized exchanges,” — Jak commented.

Trezor Keep Metal supports standard backups of both 12- and 24-word phrases, and is compatible with Shamir backup. The latter is a security standard that allows creating several unique components for recovering private keys.

To mark its tenth anniversary, the company will also release a limited edition of 2,013 devices of Trezor Safe 3 with support for only bitcoins. Part of the proceeds from sales will go to the development of Trezor Academy — an educational initiative focused on digital gold.

Earlier in May, the cybersecurity startup Unciphered posted on YouTube a video showing the hacking of a Trezor T seed phrase wallet.

Earlier, Trezor sales grew by 900% amid debates around Ledger Recover — the seed-phrase recovery option from rival Ledger, which drew mixed reactions in the community.
