U.S. authorities accuse two Russian nationals of stealing $16.8 million from crypto-platform clients

The U.S. Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) has accused two Russian citizens of fraud and organizing cyberattacks targeting clients of three crypto-service providers. This is reported in the OFAC press release.

According to investigators, Danil Potekhin and Dmitry Karasavidi participated in an “elaborate phishing campaign” from 2017 to 2018.

According to investigators, Potekhin created numerous domains imitating legitimate cryptocurrency exchanges. With them, the attackers gained access to victims’ accounts and wallets by entering their data on counterfeit websites.

Karasavidi was involved in laundering illegally obtained funds.

The cyberattacks targeted clients of two American and one foreign virtual-asset service providers. Preliminary estimates put the damage at no less than $16.8 million.

Earlier, OFAC, in absentia, accused Russian national Artem Lifshitz of conspiring to steal Americans’ personal data and to open dummy bank and cryptocurrency accounts.
