Ubisoft executive comments on negative player reaction to NFT integration
Ubisoft’s vice president of innovation for the game developer and publisher Ubisoft, Nicolas Poir, in an interview with Finder discussed the company’s response to the sharp criticism from players regarding the introduction of non-fungible tokens (NFTs).
“We firmly believe that Quartz and Digits are developments in the right direction, so the integration will continue. Obviously, fans’ opinions will help us adapt — this is our next step,” said the top executive.
According to him, Ubisoft anticipated a negative reaction, but were still somewhat upset. Poir noted that the massive fan response underscores their loyalty to the company and to the beloved franchises.
“I think gamers don’t understand what the secondary digital market can offer them. Today players see NFTs as the destruction of the planet and a tool for speculation, but we see in them an ‘endgame’ — the ability to resell their items,” he explained.
The top executive stressed that Ubisoft will integrate non-fungible tokens primarily for gamers, although they do not yet understand them. He also described this as a transition from one economic system to another, which is always difficult.
In early December 2021, Ubisoft announced the launch of the Quartz beta platform, designed for trading in-game items in NFT format. To this end, the developer signed a partnership with Tezos.
In October, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot announced plans to invest in blockchain startups and to create its own projects based on the play-to-earn concept.
